The following properties are encoded into (or decoded from) the file path:

(series) director, (series) title, (series) year, season, episode, episode title, version, part, part title, language, extension

The proposal is to update the naming scheme to:

Group, The; Lastname, Firstname/The Title[ (YEAR)]/The Title[ ([SXX][EYY])[ Episode Title]][.Version][.Part XY[.Part Title][.en].ext

For example:

Feuillade, Louis/Les vampires (1915)/Les vampires (E01).Part 1.fr.srt
Frost, Mark; Lynch, David/Twin Peaks (1991)/Twin Peaks (S01E01) Pilot.European Version.Part 1.en.srt
Coppola, Sofia/The Godfather Part 3 (2012)/The Godfather Part 3.Director's Cut.Part 1.srt

The reasoning is:

  • "Foo (S01) Bar" is easier to read than the current "Foo.Episode.Bar" (and corresponds to the 0xDB display title)
  • "Foo (S01E01) Bar" is more common and compact than the current "Foo.Season 1.Episode 1.Bar" (and again corresponds to the 0xDB display title)
  • "Foo.S01E01.Bar" would be ambiguous ("Bar" could either be Episode Title or Version)
  • "Foo S01 Bar" would make the meaning of the file name dependent on the directory name ("Codename S77 Revisited")

The following special features would remain untouched:

  • Season and Episode are numbers, but can be 00 for certain prequels or pilots
  • Part does not have to be a number, sequence is decided by sort order
  • Part names are preserved, even though currently not used in the system
  • The language "en" can be omitted

The same applies to the parsing of underscores:

"_X" -> ".X"
"X_" -> "X."
"X_Y" -> "X/Y"
"X _ Y" -> "X / Y"
"X_ Y" -> "X: Y"

What's missing:

  • Audio Name: The Title.Remastered Version.Director's Commentary.mp3
  • Handling * and " in filenames
