'findvalue' is sort of a rudimentary form of this, but: it would be nice to have a full-text index on annotations to ignore singular vs plural, etc. using Postgres' built-in full-text search support.

There would obviously be complications wrt. different languages, etc. I don't know how common it is for the 'language' field of annotations to actually be filled in, but it could perhaps help.

If the Postgres dictionary were configurable, it could also be possible to use a site-specific thesaurus to look up synonyms.
