We're realizing (as the documents section grows and gets stronger) that searching for documents is getting rather hard for people who are new to the site. 

Right now you go into Manage Documents, and then search. Also, this Documents search seems not to search within the documents. 

Is there any possible way we can do a brute-force global search across movies, texts and documents? 

This seems kind of important.

The maximum fix would be to merge texts and documents.

This would imply that the texts sidebar would no longer contain single documents, but lists of documents ("reading lists").
