The x-axis could have different resolution, depending on the y-axis -- i.e. at the top of the image, horizontal movement would be more fine-grained, while at the bottom it would correspond to the full timeline. (We may want to add a more detailed timeline above the image.)

Using a proper queue, so that the correct image loads faster, would already be an improvement.
